Shitake Mushrooms Info
A great buy when you consider the price of shiitakes in the stores. I used to buy large bags of shiitakes at Costco’, but they do not carry them anymore. Once these mushrooms are rehydrated, they are great in soups, casseroles, sauces, etc. They keep a long time–I keep them in a large airtight jar in the pantry. Great to have on hand when fresh is not available or you don’t want to make a trip to the store.

This is a mushroom patch created by people with passion and love for fungus, it goes outside of the usual monetary parameters. Read the books by Stamets, study their products, celebrate their work and research into mushrooms by buying into a piece of their knowledge. When these are not growing at home, venture into your local forest and enjoy the local harvest. A bargain at twice the price.

I’ve purchased a similar mushroom log in the past. This one is much larger, producing a bounty of mushrooms very quickly. One recommendation: After the first step of submerging the log in water for about 10 hours, you may want to put it in the basement for a few days. There is a ripe, musty odor in the first few days. The mushrooms grew much faster than the instructions predicted. No odors after the first few days. For me, it was a good way to “garden” during a cold New England winter.
