How to Create an Upside Down Tomato System Like Topsy Turvy – Update

Topsy Turvy has become the latest craze in home gardening. Growing tomatoes upside down looked like a fun thing to do for me, but I thought I could create the same thing without the cost.

So I took some peat pellets I had,

Peat Pellets are great for starting plants

soaked them in water and added a beef steak tomato seed.

Peat Pellets Provide the Perfect Growing Environment

within one week, I had a lovely sprout looking very healthy.

Next, I took a hanging basket I had in my garden supplies, inserted the sprout through the hole in the bottom and added potting soil.

Insert the Tomato through the Hole

The peat pellet will hold the tomato plant in place.

Add potting soil on top of the peat pot

I am hoping this little experiment will yield some big luscious tomatoes in no time. I will take pictures every week so you can see the progress.

It has been approximately three weeks since I started this experiment and from all appearances, the home -made upside down tomato planter is working just fine. As you can see, there’s quite a bit of healthy growth since the tiny sprout was added to the pot.

This is a pretty solid sprouting system. There are 3 trays, and they allow you to grow a pretty good variety of different sprout mixes at the same time. It’s stackable so it doesn’t take up alot of space, and it is very easy to grow sprouts. Some of the sprouts my kids aren’t big on, but I can’t sprout enough lentils! They pick them clean as a snack. I am guessing that’s a good thing. :^)

I bought this seed sprouting system because I love sprouts and had a different system many years ago. My seeds sprouted. The directions say they should be rinsed 2 times per day.

For the most part all of the components are very good. However,
the spindley hose falls way short for actual use. If the hose
were a larger diameter then this would be a good tool to have around.

Great idea to have an automated garden during the winter. Recently ordered the second system. There is a slight problem though – noise, which is appears after couple of weeks and is noticeable even few rooms away. Ended up by cutting the internal air pump off and replacing it with the external Whisper pump for aquariums.
Also, I find it rather funny, the seeds which came with the system suppose to be tomatoes according to the labels on it. After 2 months it’s clear that I’ve got peppers instead.
Overall, we enjoy the new toy.

Seedling Heat Mat

I actually bought mine from a garden store. I thought it might be a gimmicky product. I asked the woman, should I get this? She kinda shrugged and just told me to keep my receipt just in case.

Well, I am happy to say that I planted last Sunday and 4 days later, I already have cucumber starts that are 3 – 4 inches tall. The tomatoes are already starting to sprout, as are the basil. Only after I bought this did I see a time to germination chart for various plants based on various temperatures, and not it makes total sense why I am getting such good results. Very basic product, but very good.
